POLICE have arrested a man on suspicion of rape on the Isle of Wight after hunting for a suspect across Portsmouth and Southsea.

Officers arrested a 40-year-old man on the Isle of Wight as part of an ‘ongoing rape investigation’.

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary added: ‘The incident we are investigating took place on June 1 in the Ryde area of the Isle of Wight.’

Police had previously launched an appeal in the hunt for a suspect who was believed to have links to Portsmouth and Southsea, with the appeal reminding residents that harbouring or helping a suspect may be an offence.
