A CAR thief managed to escape arrest after being chased by police.

The crook stole an Audi A4 from Twyford Avenue, Stamshaw, after the owner accidentally dropped his keys outside.

The owner dialled 999 and officers chased the car until it was lost.

It was found in Brooklands Road, Bedhampton, after the thief abandoned it and fled into surrounding fields.

A force helicopter was called out at about 10.30pm on Sunday.

Details of the incident have only just been released.

Jim Graham, who lives in Brooklands Road, said: ‘I was watching the football at about 10.30pm and I could hear an unusual noise.

‘I could hear a helicopter overhead. I went outside and it turned out to be a stolen Audi parked across the entrance to our driveway.

‘There were two police cars.

‘They had police dogs with them. They continued up through our garden, up our drive and into the fields.’

The thief managed to get away. Police are still appealing for witnesses. Call 101.
