POLICE custody suites in Sussex are ‘good’ with well trained staff, according to a report.
HM Inspectorate of Prisons visited Sussex Police’s custody suites in February. Their joint report found the force provides good strategic leadership and has solid support from Sussex Police Authority.
It has also made significant long term investment in its custody suites and the staff are well trained and motivated.
There are excellent management information systems in place with sound learning from any adverse incidents, the report says.
But inspectors found some cells contained ligature points and police custody was being used too often as a safe place for those detained under the Mental Health Act.
Police said action has been taken to identify cell ligature points and minimise risks while work is ongoing to provide alternative accommodation for mentally ill detainees.
