POLICE fear a British Gas uniform stolen from a van may be used in a distraction burglary.

The branded clothing – along with a sat nav, charger and tyre snow chains – were stolen from the vehicle in Knox Road, Stamshaw.

Officers believe thieves could use the uniform to get into people’s homes by posing as a British Gas employee.

Hampshire Police spokeswoman Natalie Galloway said: ‘People are advised to check the identity of any door-to-door callers carefully.

‘If unsure call the company they work for. Never allow anyone into your home if you are at all unsure of their identity.’

The theft happened overnight between Monday and Tuesday this week. Call police on 101.
