POLICE closed part of the A27 after a lorry was found with half a dozen suspected illegal immigrants hiding inside.
At 12.30pm the driver of the Italian registered lorry pulled in to a lay-by on the A27 westbound, between Chichester and Tangmere, to stop off at a burger van.
As the driver was about to pull away other people in the lay-by heard shouting and banging coming from the rear of the lorry.
Police were called and quickly sealed off the road westbound between the McDonald’s roundabout in Chichester and the Tangmere junction.
Eyewitnesses said 10 police cars and dozens of officers with sniffer dogs escorted people out of the back of the lorry, which is believed to have come in via Calais.
The road was reopened at 1.15pm.
In a statement Sussex Police said: ‘At 12.45pm on Tuesday, February 18, police attended the A27 at Tangmere, near Chichester, and arrested six people suspected of attempting to enter the UK illegally. They were found in the cargo area of an Italian-registered lorry and the westbound A27 was temporarily closed while the incident was dealt with.’
