DETECTIVES have revealed the number plates used for a getaway car were switched before a robbery at a building society.

Police believe that the robbers swapped the registration details on a small dark-coloured car – possibly a VW Golf – which was waiting outside Nationwide, in Park Parade, Leigh Park.

As reported in The News, at about 10.30pm last Friday two men with balaclavas broke into the bank, assaulted two couriers who were emptying the cash machine, and took cassettes containing a substantial sum of money.

Detective Sergeant Ross Toms said: ‘We are very interested in the movements of the dark-coloured Volkswagen Golf before and after the robbery. We believe that the occupants of the vehicle would have switched number plates in the vicinity of Park Parade and adjourning roads prior to committing the offence. We are therefore seeking the assistance of any witnesses who saw anyone tampering of vehicles within this area before the time of the robbery.

‘We are also seeking to identify the vehicle’s direction of travel after the offence. It was last seen travelling at speed on the Petersfield Road towards the A3.’
