Paying tribute to Ms Bacon, her friend Carrina Cox, 40, said: ‘She was a very kindhearted lady who had a great sense of humour and a heart of gold.

‘She would do anything for anyone no matter what the problem was and would quite happily sit down with you to talk through any worries that you had. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.’

Officers are keen to speak to a man in the street who urged another person to call 999.

Ms Bacon died from her injuries at Southampton General Hospital, police said.
