CROOKS were deterred from criminal activity in Chichester throughout the festive period, thanks to a police project.

Operation Tinsel was designed to detect offences, arrest offenders, improve confidence by high-visibility policing, disrupt criminal behaviour and make Chichester a less attractive option for prospective thieves.

It ran from December 10 to 15, including late-night shopping days, and involved officers in plain clothes as well as uniformed officers and PCSOs.

Over the six days police arrested 20 people for conspiracy to commit burglary, theft, possession of a bladed pointed article, being wanted on warrant, possession of controlled drugs, public order, abstracting electricity, and drunkenness offences.

Sergeant Roy Higgins said: ‘This was very much a team effort, with our Neighbourhood Police Support, Chichester City and local Response officers taking part.

‘The local street drinkers and criminals were given a clear message that their criminal and anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated and as the week progressed we saw far less of them around the city.’
