THE man who represents rank-and-file police officers has welcomed the recruitment of new police.
John Apter, Hampshire Police Federation chairman, made his comments after Hampshire police and crime commissioner Simon Hayes announced the recruitment of 108 officers.
He said: ‘Over the past five years police officer numbers have been slashed by almost 1,000.
‘Ten years ago Hampshire Constabulary had 3,809 officers, by April 2016 we will have 2,884. A reduction of 925 officers.’
He said the recruitment drive will only maintain the already-reduced level.
He added: ‘I have no doubt that if the police budgets were not protected then we would have been reducing numbers, not maintaining them. For that reason this announcement is most welcome.’
