A policeman has been sacked after being caught taking drugs at a popular Portsmouth nightclub.

Ryan Sproat, who was based at Loddon Valley, Reading, Berkshire, was sacked by Thames Valley Police following a two-day misconduct hearing in front of Assistant Chief Constable Christopher Shead.

A force spokesman said that Mr Sproat was caught by a doorman at the Tiger Tiger nightclub in Gunwharf Quays taking the class A drug MDMA.

It is understood that Mr Sproat was arrested by Hampshire Police but no charges were brought because of insufficient evidence.

The spokesman said: “The misconduct panel heard evidence that Pc Sproat had procured the drug MDMA in exchange for drinks. Positive action was taken on the night by the door staff and Hampshire Police and the matter referred to TVP professional standards department.”

He added that the panel found he had breached the standards of professional behaviour pertaining to discreditable conduct.

Deputy Chief Constable John Campbell said: “Pc Sproat’s actions were totally unacceptable as a serving officer.

“Thames Valley Police officers are expected, even when off duty, to uphold the highest of standards and taking class A drugs falls well outside of those expected standards, as you would expect.”
