Pompey fan in coma after fans attacked at Euro 2016 in France

A POMPEY fan is in hospital in a coma with potentially '˜life-changing' injuries after clashes at the Euro 2016 tournament in Marseille.

Friends and a relative of Andrew Bache, known as Pepe, said on social media that the victim was resuscitated by a police officer on Saturday but is still in a coma in hospital.

Thousands of pounds have already been raised online to support him, with Pompey fans Facebook pages drumming up support.

It comes after English national media reported a 51-year-old man was in a critical condition after sustaining a serious head injury after Russian hooligans attacked ahead of England’s match with Russia.

This is understood to be Mr Bache, although he is no longer in a critical condition.

Posting on Facebook his brother Dean Bache said: ‘I have just had a call from the British Embassy and they said the hospital had informed them that his injuries are no longer life-threatening but could be life-changing.

‘He is still in a serious condition and they won’t know the extent of his injuries till he is taken out of the induced coma.

‘I was also told that the chief inspector of police has informed them that they have excellent CCTV footage of the attack and have identified those involved and pictures have been forwarded to the French police.’

Members of Mr Bache’s family are understood to be travelling to see him.

The Shepherds Crook pub, in Goldsmith Avenue, Milton, posted on its Facebook page saying it will hold a fundraiser.

Landlord Steve Hudson said Pepe is a match-day regular at his other pub, the Milton Arms.

Mr Hudson said: ‘It’s incredibly sad what’s happened to Pepe.

‘Our thoughts go out to his family.’

He added: ‘We’re going to organise something this morning just to give a little bit of help to the family, obviously it’s quite difficult for them and thing have been quite troublesome.

‘Some of the beatings that some people were given was absolutely disgraceful, it’s beyond anything I’ve seen before football violence-wise.’

Shocking scenes showed Russian fans charging towards English fans in the stadium at the end of the 1–1 draw on Satuday.

It came after two days of clashes in Marseille, overshadowing the tournament.

Conflicting reports have sought to place the blame on fans from England, Russia and French ultras.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: ‘We’re in contact with French authorities about a British national injured in Marseille and stand ready to provide further support.’
