A MAN who started an unprovoked fight when drunk has narrowly avoided jail.

Phillip Rimmel, of Shadwell Road in Portsmouth, admitted committing an assault in Monmouth Road, Portsmouth on January 7.

The 29-year-old was given a six-week jail sentence by Portsmouth magistrates, suspended for six months.

He was also given an eight-week curfew order and ordered to pay £250 compensation to his victim and pay £85 costs.
