Portsmouth man arrested on suspicion of drug driving after New Road collision that left pedestrian in hospital

A MAN from Portsmouth has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving after a collision that left a man in hospital and closed a city centre road this weekend.

An ambulance crew, a paramedic officer, and the critical care car from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance attended to treat the seriously injured pedestrian.

The injured man, a 29-year-old from Portsmouth, was taken to University Hospital Southampton.

The driver of the BMW – a 30-year-old man from Portsmouth – was arrested on suspicion of drug driving, according to a spokeswoman from Hampshire Constabulary.

She said: ‘He has been released from custody but remains under investigation.’

Police closed New Road from the junction of George Street to the junction of Northgate Avenue for more than four hours due to the incident.
