POLICE have charged a man in his 70s with sexual offences which allegedly took place more than 40 years ago.

Leo Compton is accused of raping a girl, indecent assault and gross indecency dating back to between 1969 and 1975.

The 78-year-old did not enter any pleas to the three charges at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court.

Magistrates ruled the charges are so serious they must be heard at the crown court. Compton, of King Charles Street, Portsmouth, was bailed to appear at Portsmouth Crown Court in May.
