A MAN has been jailed after he was caught carrying a knife in public.

Stanislaus Chimbani was arrested in Ariel Road, Fratton, Portsmouth, after police found he was carrying a black-handled kitchen knife on March 11.

At the time of his arrest the 22-year-old had a suspended prison sentence hanging over him for an offence of criminal damage.

The courts had imposed the sentence of 14 days in jail, suspended for nine months, just eight days before Chimbani was caught with the knife.

Chimbani, of Penhale Road, Fratton, pleaded guilty to possessing a knife in public and admitted breaching the terms of his suspended sentence when he appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court.

The magistrates sentenced him to 70 days in prison.

The court also ordered that the knife should be destroyed.
