MAGISTRATES jailed a man for four months after he stole £245 from a pub.

Thomas Wheatcroft took the money from the Clarence Gardens pub in London Road, North End.

The 31-year-old was arrested and initially denied having anything to do with the missing money.

But Wheatcroft, of London Road, changed his plea to guilty to a charge of theft before the start of his trial at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard he had previous convictions for theft.

The magistrates ordered £245 seized by the police be paid to the Greene King Brewery, which owns the pub.
