A POMPEY fan who was murdered by Ethiopian bandits might still be alive if not for ‘substandard’ security, an inquest heard.

Surveyor Justin Packham, 39, was shot and killed in what was described as a ‘classic ambush’ while working near the Somali border in Ethiopia.

David Horsley, Portsmouth and south-east Hampshire coroner, returned a verdict of unlawful killing and said: ‘If the level of security had been different, had been higher, then this outcome might have been avoided.’

Mr Packham, originally from Portsmouth, had been working in the conflict-ravaged Ogaden region for 12 weeks when he was killed on April 15 last year.
