Portsmouth rooftop standoff: Southsea man arrested on suspicion of criminal damage

POLICE involved in a five-hour rooftop standoff have arrested a man on suspicion of criminal damage.

Hampshire police said the 25-year-old man, from Southsea, was in custody.

It comes after tiles were thrown to the ground in an incident at a Portsmouth City Council-owned block of flats in Murefield Road.

Shoppers at nearby Asda watched on as the incident carried on for five hours. Officers had been called at around 8.40am before the man on the roof jumped down on to the outdoor walkway at around 1.30pm.

A cordon was in place in the car park.

A police spokesman said: '˜A 23-year-old man from Southsea [was] arrested on suspicion of criminal damage. Still in custody at this time.'
