A STUDENT from Portsmouth smuggled more than 30,000 cigarettes into the UK using packages which were labelled as containing as plastic toys and shoes.

Chinese national Jielong Xiao pleaded guilty at Portsmouth Crown Court to harbouring or dealing with tobacco products with the intent to defraud the duty payable.

The 25-year-old, of Steerforth Close, imported 33,040 cigarettes. When police searched his address and a house in Stone Street they found the cigarettes and £3,810 in cash.

Xiao was sentenced to 18 weeks in jail but was released immediately as his time in custody and under curfew counted towards the sentence.

The cigarettes were destroyed.
