A BURGLAR who broke into an 88-year-old woman’s home while she slept in her bed has been jailed for three years.

Michael O’Leary got in through a window and stole a 32in television from the house in Ebery Grove, Copnor.

O’Leary, of Derby Road, North End, pleaded guilty to burglary when he appeared at Portsmouth Crown Court.

The court heard the 21-year-old had previous convictions for offences including burglary.

Prosecutor Peter Asteris handed the judge a victim impact statement from the pensioner, which explained how she has been left frightened in her own home since the raid in February.

Sentencing him Deputy Circuit Judge Patrick Hooton said: ‘You didn’t know this lady was 88 years old.

‘You went into somebody’s house in the middle of the night.

‘It would have been a thoroughly terrifying event for anyone – for that lady it might even have been a terminal one.

‘I have heard the statement of what you have done to her and you should be thoroughly ashamed of yourself.’
