POLICE have dropped an investigation after the parents of a newborn baby reported suspicious visitors at their home.

Two women called at a house in Old Road, Gosport, where a couple had recently returned home with their two-week old daughter.

The parents, who were not expecting a visit, became worried and later called the police.

After seeing an appeal in The News, the two women contacted Hampshire Constabulary.

They work for Hampshire County Council’s adult services department and had accidentally knocked on the wrong door.

Hampshire police spokeswoman Sally Adams said: ‘As a direct result of media coverage two women from adult services have come forward to identify themselves as the callers.

‘It was a genuine mistake on their part as they went to the wrong address in the road.

‘Police are no longer investigating the incident.’

Detectives released information about the visit after initial checks with health authorities in the area failed to identify the two women.
