A THIEF who has nearly 60 previous convictions has been fined for his latest offence.

Gary Thompson was caught by security staff as he tried to leave a Co-op store in Southsea without paying for £28 worth of toiletries and eggs.

The 32-year-old pleaded guilty to theft when he appeared at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court.

Bridget O’Hagan, defending, said Thompson, of Outram Road, Southsea, had mental health issues.

She added: ‘It’s because he is simply not very good at managing his money.’

The court heard he has 59 previous convictions and is already serving a community order for another offence.

He was fined £20 with a £20 victim surcharge.
