AN ANTI-public nudity campaigner has handed in a 1,500-strong petition to Portsmouth City Council and the police in protest against a naked bike ride.

Sarah Carter, a 38-year-old church employee, said she was ‘overwhelmed’ with the huge response to her petition calling for the cancellation for the World Naked Bike Ride event this Friday.

She said: ‘We’ve had a lot of mums signing, as well as members of the Christian and Muslim communities and surprisingly lots of university students.

‘All we’re asking is for them to put their clothes on and not upset or distress residents.’

Mrs Carter said council leader Gerald Vernon-Jackson declined to meet her yesterday saying it was a police matter – but she handed in the petition to the council’s events department as well as Southsea police station.
