A RAPE trial has been delayed after the defendant was injured in a car crash.

John Wingate, of Stakes Hill Road, Waterlooville, was due to go on trial at Portsmouth Crown Court yesterday.

The 25-year-old is charged with rape and sexual activity with a child.

Both offences, which relate to one girl, are alleged to have happened in October last year.

Wingate denies the allegations.

He attended court but his barrister, Pierce Power, explained that he was too ill to stand trial.

‘On Friday night he was involved in a car accident,’ he said.

‘He suffered a fractured cheek, a broken nose and a number of stitches to the inside of his mouth. He is in a lot of pain.’

Wingate was released on bail to stand trial on a date to be fixed.
