Service helping domestic abuse victims welcomes recommendations in report on Hampshire police

The Southern Domestic Abuse Service’s chief executive Claire Lambon said it is worrying a report released yesterday found concerns in the way the force supported victims of domestic abuse.

Ms Lambon said: ‘The report identifies Hampshire police generally protects vulnerable people well but it is worrying that HMIC has identified serious concerns.

‘I support the recommendations that the force needs to address the low arrest rates for domestic violence and abuse and address the fact that there is a disproportionately high number of investigations that do not progress due to the victim not supporting police action.

‘While it is very important the police listen to the wishes of victims and their views are taken in to account, I would question what processes are being used that create an environment that deters so many victims in supporting action.’

As previously reported in The News, the HM Inspectorate of Constabulary graded the forces as ‘requires improvement’ and has ordered chiefs to come up with a plan.

Figures showed 24 per cent of all domestic abuse crimes end without action.
