Ship crew held '˜in slavery'

CREW members arriving in commercial ships at ports in the county could be modern slavery victims, police said.

It comes as Hampshire Modern Slavery Partnership is urging cruise and shipping companies to sign up.

The Rev Roger Stone, Apostleship of the Sea port chaplain for the south coast ports in England said he had seen deficiencies on ships that contravene health and safety regulations as well as human rights.

Inspector Dave Humphries added: ‘We know from what people, such as Roger, tell us that there are crew members on some commercial ships that come into our ports being exploited and this may amount to offences under the new Modern Slavery Act.’

Jess Gealer, partnership co-ordinator, urged people to report incidents.
