Residents have told of their shock after a man was found dead in a toilet block by council workers.

They called police yesterday after making the discovery near Rosie’s Kitchen in Rowner Road, Rowner, Gosport.

Residents living in the area reacted with shock at the death, which is not being treated as suspicious.

Michelle Dunbar, 30, said: ‘It’s scary seeing as I’m right on top of it.

‘I saw a copper come out the toilet with a big red thing that they break down the doors with.’

People out at the nearby Green Dragon pub stopped to look as police cars arrived at around 6.30pm and officers cordoned the area off.

Abi Woodward, 18, from Bridgemary, was with her friend Sasha Ewing, 18, from Rowner.

Abi said: ‘It’s a bit weird, it’s very odd.

‘We used to come here and play here as kids.’

Sasha added: ‘I feel a little bit threatened by it and frightened – it’s shocking as it’s so close to home.’

Last night a detective sergeant was at the scene but police confirmed they are not treating the death as suspicious.

A Hampshire police spokeswoman said: ‘Police were called to the scene at about 5pm after council workers found the body of a man.

‘It is not being treated as suspicious at this time.’

Formal identification has not been completed.

John Jackson, 32, of Lincolnshire but who was working in Gosport last night, added: ‘It’s not nice.

‘This is happening more and more often now.

‘I was born and raised here, we never used to see stuff like this.

‘People using that toilet are going to know someone has died in there.

‘It will probably shut down because of that.’
