THE theft of a £5 chicken cost a shoplifter £220.

Blerim Kacubej, 43, of Green Road, Southsea, pleaded guilty to stealing the bird from a Co-op in Elm Grove, Southsea, on January 31.

He was fined £200 and told to pay £20 to a fund for crime victims by Portsmouth magistrates.

Magistrates made no order for compensation as the stolen chicken was recovered.
