THIEVES stole £1,000 from an 84-year-old woman during a burglary.

The crooks broke into the home in Bristol Road, Southsea, through the front door that was not double-locked.

They searched the ground floor before fleeing with the cash.

Now police are urging homeowners to ensure their doors are properly locked. The burglary happened between 10pm on May 1 and 6am on May 2, but details have only just been released.

PC David Calvert said: ‘The victim had lifted the handle of her uPVC front door, but had not turned the key. This left the door only partly locked. It is likely that the offender or offenders entered and exited the property through the front door.

‘The homeowner is an 84-year-old vulnerable victim and is very distressed by this.’

Call PC Calvert at Fratton station on 101 or 0845 0454545.
