A PORTSMOUTH campaign group which raises awareness of domestic violence against women will hold a day of sports activities.

The Portsmouth White Ribbon Group will compete against other community groups and members of Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service in egg and spoon and relay races at Guildhall Square on Saturday.

The women’s organisation is also looking to send a baton around the country in a bid to highlight the link between violence and sport.

Sarah Cheverton, co-chairwoman of the Portsmouth White Ribbon Group said: ‘As many people will have seen in the news lately, police across the country have been issuing warnings about the expected rise in domestic violence during Euro 2012. We know that domestic and other types of violence tend to increase around major sporting events and we aim to raise awareness and to highlight ways we can all join together to fight violence against women in our communities.’

The event is from 11am to 1pm.
