Two men are being hunted by police after a taxi driver’s ear was bitten off in a viscious attack.

The 39-year-old victim, who works for Aquacars, was punched and kicked in the ‘sustained’ assault.

He needed hospital treatment after his ear was bitten off in the attack in the Widley Road and Strode Road area of Stamshaw.

The two men fled the scene between 9pm and 9.30pm on May 20, with one running off towards Twyford Avenue. The other ran south on Widley Road.

Minutes before the attack two other people had been accused of leaving the taxi without paying their fare.

It is not known whether the two attackers had been in the taxi.

Investigating officer PC Ben Hitchens from Portsmouth’s targeted patrol team, said: ‘The intensity of this assault was unusual, considering it was linked to fare dodging.

‘We know there were plenty of people in the Widley Road and Strode Road area on [the] night.

‘It was still light so I’m looking for people to come forward who witnessed the assault or who may know the suspects, who are believed to be from Portsmouth.’

The first man is white, 6ft tall, of a thin build, aged between 25 and 30 with short brown hair and clean shaven. He wore a peach coloured polo shirt and trousers or jogging bottoms.

The second attacker has a darker complexion, is 5ft 6in tall, of a medium build, aged 25 to 30, with short hair and clean shaven. He wore a light coloured top and trousers - possibly jeans.

Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Ben Hitchens at Cosham Police Station on 101 or 0845 0454545.
