Teenagers risk their lives to damage church roof

A 16-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy risked their lives by clambering up onto the roof of Portsmouth's biggest church.

The teenagers caused minor criminal damage to the roof of the historic St Mary’s Church in Fratton Road yesterday.
They were seen dislodging tiles from the roof of the church in Fratton Road by onlookers at around 1.40pm yesterday.
A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary said: ‘We received a call at 1.40pm that two youths had been seen on the roof of the church.
‘They were brought down safely from the roof.
‘There was a minimal amount of damage to the roof of the church as they were found to have dislodged some tiles.’
The pair were brought down from the 50ft roof by firefighters.
A spokesman from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘We received the call at 2.06pm. A 15-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl were rescued from the roof of the church by firefighters using a ladder.’
The duo were taken home by police officers after the incident and the police say they are liaising with the church as whether to take further action against them.
