A WOMAN was assaulted by a man who was trying to steal her dog in Gosport.

The 25-year-old was approached by the offender, who tried to grab her dog, a sprocker spaniel puppy.

As the owner fought back she was slapped in the face.

She managed to keep hold of the dog and ran away.

The incident took place between 4.20pm and 4.40pm on Friday, December 13, in Forton Road at the junction with Moreland Road.

The victim was uninjured but shocked by the incident.

The offender was white, aged between 30 and 40, with shaved hair, about 5ft 9in to 5ft 11in tall, and of stocky build.

Detective Constable Neil Harrison said: ‘This is an unusual incident and believed to be opportunist.

‘The roads would have been busy at this time and therefore we appeal for anyone who has witnessed the incident or who may have information to make contact.

‘We have not received any similar reports of this nature in Gosport.’
