A WOMAN was surprised in bed by a man wielding a hammer who broke into her home in the middle of the day.

The victim, a 25-year-old woman, was asleep in the bedroom of her home in Nutfield Place, in Landport, when a man broke in with a claw hammer.

She woke up to find the offender in her bedroom and, realising she was there, he threatened her before fleeing the property.

The incident happened on Monday at around 12.45pm, and the man was seen running off carrying the claw hammer and two PlayStation 3 games.

He is white, aged between 18 and 23, around 5ft 7in or 5ft 8in, of a medium build, with blond hair, and wearing a light grey tracksuit with the hood up.

Detective Constable Allison Fraser, of Fratton CID, said: ‘This is an unusual and rare occurrence where the offender has been disturbed inside the house in the middle of the day.

‘He had a hammer with him which had been used to prise open the double-glazed window, and still had it on him when he confronted the victim in her bedroom.

‘Given that it happened in broad daylight, I appeal to anyone that was in the area at the time who may have seen this man in that area to get in touch. He ran off when confronted, and was clearly surprised to see the victim in the house.’

Anyone with information regarding this incident, or anyone who saw anything suspicious, can call 101 and ask for Det Con Fraser at Fratton CID. Alternatively they can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
