AN opportunist thief stole cash and bank cards from a vulnerable elderly woman in Gosport after asking about roof slates.

Police are appealing for witnesses after the 81-year-old woman reported personal property stolen.

Sometime between 11am and 12.30pm on September 17, a man entered a house in Kings Road enquiring about roof slates and walked out.

The woman later noticed her purse containing £200 in cash and three bank cards had been taken from a bedside table.

The suspect is white, in his 40s, around 5ft 8in tall, with broken front teeth, short black hair, and he wore a long black coat.

Investigating officer PC Samantha Gee said: ‘Were you in the area at the time? Did you see a man acting suspiciously or the stolen property? Have you seen anyone matching the description or know of any suspects? Have you had anyone knocking on your door offering services such as roof repairs or offering to paint your house?

‘Our crime prevention advice is that you do not allow unknown people into your home; use a chain on your door at all times when talking to strangers who call at your door and always ask for identification.’

Anyone with information is asked to call PC Gee at Gosport police station on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111. Mini-com users should contact 01962 875000.
