A CALLOUS thief who stole Christmas shopping money from an 89-year-old woman is being hunted by police.

The elderly victim was in Cosham High Street when the man distracted her by stroking her dog outside the Salvation Army.

The man fled with her purse, which contained bank cards and £100 the victim was planning to spend on Christmas presents,

PC Michael Nol, who is investigating the incident, said: ‘Thankfully this is not a common occurrence; however the elderly victim is understandably very upset by this opportunistic theft.

‘Anyone who may have seen the incident, or recognises the man from the description, is urged to contact police.’

The theft happened between 2.30pm and 3.15pm on November 21 but police have only just released details.

The man is described as white, aged about 40, of an average build and 5ft 8in tall.

He was wearing a trilby hat and a dark-coloured, dirty or worn anorak.

Call PC Nol on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
