vandals left a trail of destruction at one of Chichester Harbour’s most cherished beauty spots.

Countryside officers from Chichester Harbour Conservancy discovered the wrecking spree at Ellanore Spit, between Itchenor and East Head.

Vandals covered a bird- watching shelter with blue spray paint and uprooted an oak tree that had been planted to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the conservancy last year.

Nicky Horter, the harbour’s countryside officer, said: ‘This is so disappointing for us as our volunteers have spent many hours maintaining the bird hide for the public to enjoy.

‘We are particularly upset about the anniversary oak tree which was found uprooted on the beach.’

The tree survived and will be replanted. Call police with information on 101.
