TRAVELLERS have set up camp at a play area in Leigh Park.

The group of travellers moved on to Bitterne Park, off Bitterne Close, which is close to Staunton Country Park.

There are four caravans and a number of vehicles on the site which they began to occupy on Thursday afternoon.

The area is a grassy open space that is used by local children and families.

Rangers from Havant Borough Council have visited the site and assessed the needs of the group.

They said there had been no criminal damage committed in the travellers gaining access to the site.

The council has now started the process of repossession of the land through legal proceedings.

A spokeswoman for the council said: ‘Until such time as we can reclaim the park land, Havant Borough Council will continue to work closely with Hampshire Constabulary to ensure that the proper procedures within the law are followed.

‘Notice to quit was served almost immediately, we are now waiting on a court date.’
