POLICE removed a group of travellers who set up camp on some playing fields.

A group of travellers moved onto the fields at Oaklands Park in Chichester on Friday. There were fears a festival planned to take place on the field at the weekend would be disrupted. But officers from Sussex Police forced the travellers to leave on Saturday, a day before the festival began.

Sgt Alan Fenn said: ‘The travellers had moved onto the site but after speaking to them they agreed to move on again.

‘This was reinforced by the use of a Section 61 power to ensure the festival could be held on the playing fields.

‘The travellers left peacefully and the likelihood of any disruption to the event has now been minimised.’
