TWO people have been arrested over a suspected arson attack in Southsea.
Hampshire Constabulary received a call to an address in Gains Road shortly after 6pm on Friday, October 18, 2013.
Petrol had been poured over the front door of the address and set on fire.
Initial enquiries suggest the resident of this address was not the target of this attack. The motive remains unclear.
A 43-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man were arrested on Friday evening on suspicion of arson. They were questioned and later released on police bail pending further enquiries.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Andrew Larder said: ‘Between 5.30pm and 6pm on Friday evening, petrol was poured over the front door and set alight. Extensive damage has been caused to the front of the house, door and hallway.
‘The smoke alarm alerted the only occupant and a neighbour tackled the fire with a large bucket of water.
‘If not for the prompt and courageous actions of the neighbours, this could have been a much more serious situation. Thankfully the fire did not have a chance to spread.
‘We are looking to recover a plain grey tracksuit and shoes, which may have been abandoned in the area. I am asking local residents to check their gardens and bins for these items.’
