Underpass in Portsmouth sealed off after sexual assault on woman

A WOMAN managed to run to safety after a man tried to sexually assault her.

The 26-year-old woman was walking in the underpass at Lake Road and Cornmill Street at around 3.45am.

She walked past a group of men and it is alleged one of them tried to assault her.

The woman suffered slight grazes and bruises.

Officers have been guarding the scene today as an investigation continues.

A Hampshire police spokeswoman said: ‘Police are investigating a report of an alleged sexual assault that happened at about 3.45am in the underpass where Lake Road meets Cornmill Street.

‘It’s believed to be an isolated incident.

‘A 26-year-old woman walked past a group of men and one of those allegedly attempted to sexually assault her.

‘He’s described as a white man over 5ft 11ins, muscular build.

‘She was able to flee the scene and called the police.

The force has advised people to keep to well-lit paths and keep in contact with friends or relatives when walking alone.
