POLICE have arrested a 50-year-old man following an assault, which resulted in parts of Southsea Common being cordoned off.

Hampshire Constabulary say they arrested the man in connection with an assault on a woman in her 40s near to Clarence Parade, Southsea, at around 1.30am today.

He is being questioned by officers.

A cordon was put up around the alleged scene to allow officers to examine the area, which was lifted just before 11.30am.

The woman has been taken to hospital for treatment.
