POLICE have said they are unsure what type of animal was found headless on playing fields in Hilsea.

Initially, officers said they were investigating a dead dog without a head but they have now said they are unsure of what it was.

It was reported after a member of the public found the body of what they believed to be a dog without a head.

Officers have notified the RSPCA and Portsmouth City Council after the discovery on the playing fields near Hilsea Railway Station at around 10.45am today.

A spokeswoman said: ‘We were called by a member of the public who discovered the body of a dead dog but we are unsure what animal was found. We cannot say for sure it was a dog.’
