Chesney Quigley was working in the pub on Friday evening and said that nothing occurred to aggravate an attack during the course of the night.

She said: ‘He’s one of the most loveliest people you could ever meet - he couldn’t do anything to harm anyone.

‘I’ve known him for quite a while as my sister went to school with him and he comes in here fairly often. He’s never caused any trouble whatsoever I was devastated when I found out the news.

‘It was a really good night on Friday. Everyone really enjoyed themselves and everyone left the pub in a really good mood.

‘It wasn’t until a few hours later that the attack had happened. We’d already shut up the pub and left and didn’t find out until the next morning.’

A customer who was drinking in the pub on Friday evening said: ‘It’s unbelievable how someone can do that to someone like him really.

‘I don’t know him that well but he seems like a genuine bloke, someone who would never imagine to get caught up in anything like this.’

Another resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said: ‘I know him really really well and see him most days when we take our children to school.

‘Every time I see him, he’s doing something with his daughter. He takes her to school every morning and loves spending time with his kids - he’s a brilliant dad.

‘There is no way he could have done anything to provoke an attack. He is a gentleman and a fight would be the last thing that he would be looking for.

‘I saw him stagger past the window walking home. With the pub round the corner, we see people wobbling home all of the time.

‘It was only when my son said he was bleeding that I went out, but he was gone by then and it’s remarkable how he even managed

‘I really hope he gets better and makes a speedy recovery.’
