A member of staff at The Florence Arms said: ‘There was talk in a shop up the road of someone falling from the window of a block of flats.

‘I didn’t really pay any attention, I was just in the shop on my way to work. The police presence has gone down now, but there were quite a few here this morning, about 10 or 12 police officers.’

Rebecca Painter, an employee at Moggys Cafe, said: ‘There was talk about someone falling or jumping from a window. That’s what I have heard. It’s word of mouth.

‘The police haven’t been in. Some of the customers were shocked. But no one had seen anything, so I don’t know where it came from.

‘It’s the first I’ve heard of anything like this happening around here. But it’s only my first week in the job, and I don’t live around here.’

Southsea resident John Stanley, 57, said: ‘I live in Clarendon Road, I came home from my sister’s place this morning and saw the barrier up about an hour ago and it’s still ongoing.

‘People have been walking by the police cordon having a nosy, but they haven’t been asking questions.’

Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information about what happened to contact them on 101 quoting Operation Tone.

They say they are not at this stage linking this with a similar incident in Salisbury Street, Southampton on Saturday.
