Vandals paint eyes of soldier statues at Portsmouth war memorial

PEOPLE have spoken of their shock after Portsmouth's war memorial was vandalised.

The faces of the two statues of soldiers, which is located in Guildhall Square, have been defaced and their eyes have been covered in blue paint.

Terence Bryant, 61, from Paulsgrove, said: ‘I think it’s absolutely disgusting that a war memorial that remembers the fallen has been desecrated in this way.

‘It’s there to remember the people that died in previous wars and it’s for people to go and visit not to vandalise so I think it’s absolutely disgusting that people have done this and they should be made accountable for what they have done.’

Rachael Smart, 43, from Gosport, added: ‘It’s so disrespectful.

‘My grandad was in the war and I know people that have been injured in the war. I don’t understand why people would want to do it. It’s unbelievable.

‘That is there in honour of all the people who fought for us in all the wars.’
