All four, who were of average build, fled empty-handed but the victim suffered cuts to his hands in the attack.

Detective Constable Graham Skull said: ‘This attack took place along a quiet, unlit footpath near to the new bus route.

‘This kind of group attack is rare in this area, however we would like to remind members of the public to stick to well lit and populated areas and walk with other people whenever possible.’

‘Anyone with information is asked to call DC Skull on 101, quoting 44160089925, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.’
