FOOTBALL fans clashed during Pompey’s game against Newport.

The fighting allegedly happened between supporters of both teams, before and after the game on Saturday, in which Portsmouth lost 1-0 at Fratton Park.

One man is believed to have suffered from a fractured skull and is being treated in hospital.

Police said that two arrests have been made, and will release further details later.

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesman said: ‘A 20-year-old man from Newport was arrested for being drunk and disorderly.

‘We believe there was a second arrest for an assault at Fratton railway station.

‘The British Transport Police are dealing with this.’

Fans later took to social-networking site Twitter, to criticise the violence.

Many said violence has no place in football.

The Pompey game was set to finish as a 0-0 draw, but this changed in the 84th minute.

Andy Sandell scored the winning goal, giving all three points to the Welsh club.

It is the first League Two defeat for Pompey this season.

It is also their first defeat in the past 11 league fixtures, since Andy Awford took over.
