THIEVES have been targeting a village, sparking a warning from police.

During June police have seen an increase in crime in South Harting, near Petersfield.

There were two attempted house burglaries, nine burglaries to outbuildings, two thefts from vehicles and one report of criminal damage.

Items stolen have been general garden machinery, power tools, fishing rods, meat, and a pressure washer.

The criminal damage was caused on entry at one of the burglaries by a crowbar or something similar.

Sergeant Jonathan Chapman, from Sussex police, said: ‘This is a most unusual level of crime for South Harting.

‘We are making enquiries to try to trace those responsible and officers are paying extra attention to movements in the area. Meanwhile we urge local residents and those who pass through the village regularly to help us catch these criminals by reporting suspicious sightings.’
