Warning after spike in '˜garden hopping' burglaries in Portsmouth

BURGLARS have struck five times in 11 days in the city, police have warned.

PC Nicholas Jackson said thieves hopped over gardens to get to unlocked back doors or windows in Portsmouth.

He said: ‘Opportunist thieves will take advantage of insecure homes so please ensure you lock your doors and windows and keep your valuables out of sight.

‘I would also urge local residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour to police.’

Police said raiders stole cash from an address in Hampshire Street, Buckland, on July 9.

The other burglaries were:

n A wallet, Amazon tablet and titanium ring with a blue sapphire from a home in Gruneisen Road, Stamshaw, on July 11.

n A handbag from a house in Cardiff Road, North End, on July 8.

n A handbag and two mobile phones from another address in Cardiff Road.

n A thief entered a third address in Cardiff Road on July 1 but was disturbed and fled empty handed.
